Custom Background on new Blogger Template Designer

Bleeping Blog Design Tutorials

Welcome to the first of several tutorials that I thought would make things a little easier for you.  I love helping people, but I've noticed that some of your questions are matching up with those that I've answered before.  So, if there's something that bugging you about working with your *bleeeeeeping* blog - let me know!

Custom Background with Template Designer

There are a LOT of tutorials out there about changing the html on blogger to use backgrounds.  There are even people who tell you to put it in a gadget or widget.  While both of these work, they are tedious and the widget idea actually loads two backgrounds so slows down your blog.  Well no more!  Blogger's new Template Designer has made it easier for you.

First you need a background.  You can create your own or use one of the many free backgrounds that are available.  You are going to need to download the file rather than link to it.  Be sure to verify that doing so does not violate the terms of use for the site where you found the file.  So grab your graphics file and let's go change that background!

You can download the PDF version of these instructions here:  Custom Background with Template Designer

 1.  From your dashboard, click Design

2.  Click Template Designer

Note - select the template that has the tab style you like best BEFORE moving on.

 3. Click Background

4. Click the Background Image box

5. Click Upload Image

This screen tells you to use images that are 1800 x 1600 px.  These are really big files.  I make backgrounds at 1450 x 1100 @ 100 ppi and they work just fine with the upload.

6. Click Browse and upload the background file.

7. Adjust Settings for Background
     Alignment for most
       backgrounds is going
       to be center top.
Tile only if you have a
       small repeating image.
     Uncheck Scroll with
page if you are not tiling.

8. Click Layout

9. Adjust Width so that it fits best with your background file.

10.  Click Apply to Blog

That's it!!  Enjoy your new background freedom!

  1. Thank you for the awesome tutorial. I am using one of the premades, but it is nice to know that there is this option. You've made it very easy to understand and I will attempt it one day very soon. Thanks

  6. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I used to design my own backgrounds with the old templates, but after the change over...I have had no idea how to do it. I tried a different tutorial & it didn't work. This worked perfectly!
