Art Journal Prompt:  Use A Quote

Instructions:

Pick a quote out that you like, have been saving, have not known where to use it… and throw it into your project today.  Journal, card, scrapbook page… something else; just use a quote today.

Example Page:

Use a Quote

How this example was done:

Here’s the video of how I did my page:

First step – Background.  Since this is my paper bag album, it needed a little prep to get the background I wanted today.

  • gesso to lighten and seal the paper
  • written text to cover the gesso and add texture
  • collaged bits of my daughter’s draft for her story and some graph paper

Second step – Color.  I used two shades of blue on the background.  Lighter blue in the center, scraped on with a junk card, then darker around the edges.  I blended the two together with a paper towel.

Third step – Glow.  I used thin yellow paint to put in the “glow” that would eventually be around my fairy bell flowers.  You can rub it out to soft edges with a dry brush or with a paper towel.  I show both in the video.

Fourth step – Fairy Bells.  I painted in my flowers with yellow and pink.

  • blend colors for a base coat, dry
  • double load brush with pink and yellow, paint the bells again with yellow in the center
  • double load brush with two shades of green and sweep in a main stem
  • liner brush to put in stems and sepal and squiggles around the main stem
  • liner brush to add red/pink mix for deeper shadows on the flower

No, I didn’t know the name of the little green part that hangs above the flowers.. but I googled it and found this image in a 2nd grade lesson plan.  Maybe I should have asked my kids!  LOL

Fifth step – Gel Transfer.  I had this printed image of a dragonfly that I wanted to put in… and did it with a transfer.  It’s not perfect, but that’s the nature of gel transfers… and my impatience for it to dry.  LOL

Sixth step – Quote.  I wrote in my quote… and I think I would have liked it better if I’d have printed it and put it in as a collage instead.  *shrug* ….next time.

Here’s the one I used:

Failure indicates that you have moved outside of your box
into an unknown zone,
and that whatever you tried didn't work perfectly.

It is not an indication that you should jump back into your shell.
It simply means you are stretching your definitions of yourself in every way.

It also is not something to avoid.

Supplies used today:

A Word from Tee:

Was removing the links for items I didn’t use from my supply list and saw inktense pencils.  I think I’ll go back and use them to add more depth.  That could be cool.  If I do, I’ll share it with you.

I have gotten several emails about my new paper bag journal.  I’m recording a video on how to make your own and will be offering it as an inexpensive class --- ONLINE --- on Sunday.

  1. A paper bag journal sounds interesting. I took a class last week to make a Japanese stab binding journal. It came out pretty good. Now I have to try making one on my own.

  2. I love the idea of a paper bag journal. I uses lots of paper bags in mine but have never had one sole of that material.

I love this prompt and your page is beautiful as always. Wonderful job.
