What can you make along the line? Use lines in your page today. Use one or more to be your focus or to accent your design.
I used line in the edge of my pocket as well as an anchor for my elements.

How I did my page:
Here’s the video showing how to create this pocket and demoing this page:
First step – Pocket. This is the first type of pocket that I’ll show you. This style uses three pages in your journal.
Gesso – to seal the inside of the pocket
Fold – fold the corner of the pocket page toward the back of the pocket
Trim – cut off excess paper above the fold. Leave a strip to glue down. this will reinforce the edge of your pocket.
Glue – use glue or permanent double sided tape to adhere the flap down
Gesso – cover the folded edge with gesso
Glue – you can use really strong adhesive for this, but I chose to use quick dry glue. Put it along the side and bottom edges of the pocket page.
Close the Pocket – flip the page so that the pocket page rests on the pocket back and press the adhesive or glue to seal the side and bottom edge.
Second step – Background. Now that the pocket is finished, you can finish the page anyway you like. Here’s how I did mine.
Gesso – to make the paper bag on the pocket and the watercolor paper on the right act the same when painted
Neocolor – I scribbled yellow and ochre over both pages
Water – Then I set the neocolors and blended them with a wet brush. Be sure to brush down under the pocket flap some as well
Then I used liquid acrylic paint for more color and texture. Watch the video to see how that went onto the page and either blended or stood out from the neocolors.
Third step – Along the Line.
Shapes – First I blocked in some shapes and a rough line in browns
Define – then I used darker and lighter shades to separate the shapes
Depth – I used a waterbrush with black acrylic ink to make the back rectangles even darker
Shadows – I added shadows around the bottom of my shapes with my watered down brown acrylic ink (waterbrush)
Splatter – Not sure what happened to my toothbrush, so I used my modified stencil brush (just needs stiff bristles) to splatter brown paint in two shades
Doodle – I used a dip pen and white acrylic ink to doodle around the edges and over the top of the shapes
I’m trying to decide whether or not to do the Sketchbook Challenge for 2011. It’s about 50 dollars to participate … and that’s a lot for my family right now. It seems like a lot of fun and a great chance to get your art out there… but I’d be very disappointed to do it and then have no one see the journal. If I did do it.. I’d choose the “Along the Line” theme.
What do you guys think? Is the project worth the investment?
I am so behind reading and commenting on blogs!!! I love this page and have to go back and watch the video to see how you did it.
I signed up for the Skechbook Challenge this time. I've know people have done it the last few years, but I never signed up. I find it hard to give away my artwork. lol My theme is "Travel With Me." I think it fits me perfectly and it will come along with me in the car and when I go back to Venice this summer. The actual library for the sketchbooks is in Brooklyn and some day I plan on going over to see it.
3 Cool people sounded off~:
