Altered Message Page and Prompt

AM-Polaroid

Art Journal Prompt:  Altered Message

Instructions:

1. Think about something you’d like to say to the generations that follow us.

2. Create a page using magazine images.  Alter them to demonstrate, display or highlight your message.

Example Page:

How this example was done:

First step – Background.

  • Gesso – I gessoed my paper bag pages to seal them a bit and thicken them
  • Color – next I put on a layer of this rich dusty dark blue color.  I mixed Payne's gray and ultramarine blue to get the color I wanted

Second step – Collage.  I used gel medium to put my images onto my page.

  • Title – this text seemed to fit well.
  • Splash – I’ve seen this in several magazines.  It always stops me on this page.  The ad has a little conversation hidden in the ice and I just liked that.
  • Blend – I blended the collage by rubbing some of the background color over the edges of the paper
  • Texture – at the same time, I mixed it with turquoise.  I spread that mixture over the whole page with my fingers.
  • Alter - I covered the messages in the ice with white acrylic paint
  • Make it match – finally I put a sheer coat of blue neocolor over the magazine images

Third step – Say it.  I used my dip pen and acrylic ink along with portfolio oil pastels to send my message.

Around the splash it says:

Standing still is not an option.  Get up, go out and live life to the fullest of your ability. This is not about money or time. Money will come and only you can make the time to enjoy your life and family.

Fourth step – Doodles.  I used my pitt brush pens to do some subtle doodles in the background and white to make waves around the title.

Nothing major… just square and circles… but they add visual interest to the background.

A Word from Tee:

This is the legacy I hope that I leave with my children. We live in the moment and enjoy life as much as we can… they are happy kids… as you’ll be able to tell if I ever do a live show when they are home.  They have big loud laugher and it fills the house with joy.
