Art Journal Prompt: Coloring Book
Instructions:
Use a coloring book image in today’s page. This can be clipart, someone else’s sketch or a coloring image from your kids books.

How this example was done:
For my page, I used an image that a local artist sent to me. She didn’t know I’d be using it, so I hope that she’s pleased with our joint project!
If you don’t know, my son Joey has autism. His school has assigned a paraprofessional to go to some of his honors classes with him to help him stay focused. She’s a godsend! Her name is Marsha Hatcher.
Over time, Joey found out that Ms. Hatcher is an artist and with a little research on my part… I found out she’s quite accomplished, award winning and just freaking awesome!
She’s pictured here along with one of her award winning paintings. Incredible.
So, lucky me.. she often sends home notes with little sketches on them. I treasure them… it’s impossible for me to throw them away.
Click her image to visit her page and see more of her incredible work.
Today, I’m using one of her sketches as the inspiration and focus for today’s prompt.
| First step – Background. I just smeared paint all over my page today in two blues and some white.
|
| Second step – Collage. This is the sketch that Ms. Hatcher did. It’s on a cheap brown napkin.. but I kept looking at it and thinking… I can use this.
|
| Third step – Painting the Image. I used acrylics, neocolors and inktense pencils to paint the face. This is an in-progress shot. I added only a little more after this image.
|
| Fourth step – Finishing. I added more depth to the face then a border in green oil pastel and a black one inside the green. I smudged the black into and over the edges of the collage.
The last thing I did was to use my dip pen and white acrylic ink to put Ms. Hatcher’s name on.. journal about it all and draw squiggly broken lines around the cat.
