Glass Bottle Tutorial Video and Blog Candy

MiaBPolaroid

Art Journal Prompt:  Message in a Bottle

Instructions:

Paint, collage or sketch a bottle into your page.  Then leave a message for your future self.

Example Page:

Message-in-a-Bottle

How I did this page:

Here’s the video of how I did my page:

First step – Foundation.  what you do art on is called a “support”.  My support is my art journal pages. Today I have watercolor paper on the left and paper bag (folded and creased up) on the right.

  • Gel Medium – I did swirls of gel medium to leave texture on the paper bag.
  • Gesso – full coverage of gesso seals the two different kinds of paper and makes them act the same.

Second step – Bottle.  You can use a digital stamp, stamp, collage, or gel transfer if you like.  Me.. I sketched in a bottle to paint.

Third step – Painting.  I used portfolio water soluble oil pastels to do the page today.  See the video on the steps to painting a glass bottle.

After I finished and the paint dried, I sprayed my pages with fixative so I could continue working.

Fourth step – Collage.  Book pages make me happy.  I love them. I put this one on and painted over it with thinned cream color paint with just a touch of yellow added in.

Fifth step – Journaling.  Dip pen.. what else?  LOL  I wrote my future self a little ditty (aka poem) and a message to remember these times.

Sixth step – Shadows.  I used my waterbrush with watered down brown acrylic ink to add shadows around the collage and feint lines to give the impression of the edge of the table through the bottle.

Blog Candy:

Drink-Me-Online-Sample

On May 1st  I’ll be giving this digital stamp set to one person.  I sketched this bottle on my computer – you can click on the image to see it digitally colored and used on a card.  The beauty of this is that you can print it at any size that you like.

All you have to do to enter the drawing is leave a comment on this post.  If you don’t have an email address or blog attached to your profile, or leave only your name, I won’t be able to reach you.  I have to be able to reach you if you win!

Please leave your email address like this: greenislescrafts (at) gmail (dot) com.

That’s it!  Good Luck!

A Word from Tee:

I’ll have another give away very soon.  The publisher of one of my newest books just sent me a copy to share with you.  I’ll demo something from the book this week and you can enter for that drawing as well.  Please tell your friends about today blog candy and the one coming up!  This book ROCKS!

  1. tee,

Great video. I usually just use these as a background, will have to think differently about them now.

How are you mounting your camera to get this view?

  2. @Kate

Oh Kate! LOL If you saw my contraption for filming you'd laugh at me! My camera is one of those flat little cameras and tripods didn't work to get the angle.. soooooo.. I bought a travel easel (for painting) and created a harness out of ribbon. It's tied to the legs, center support and top of the tripod.

My camera or my phone sit in the harness for the filming.. and I'm working under the tripod. I had to lift it up when I switched to this larger book.

  7. This is a great tutorial. It helped me understand shadows and shading much better. The question I have is, when you use paper bags for a journal do you cut them open before binding them or do you use them doubled? Also, what do you do with the flap? I come to your site everyday. Love the prompts. You are a wonderful teacher.
