In Style Paivi Eerola Prompt and Page

InStyle-PE-Polaroid

Art Journal Prompt:  In Style – Paivi Eerola

Instructions:

Create a page today that is in the style of Paivi Eerola.  Here is an example of her work.  Please click on the image to go to her blog and see others and even look over her tutorial on creating pages like these.

Paivi doesn’t stop.  She’s got line and color and doodles.. and her doodles have doodles!  There’s zing and zip and pow in there too… Love it!

Example Page:

Now… I’m more a white space kind of gal… even when my white space is blue or pink or green or… multicolored.  Still.. I love this jumbled busy.. too much going on style that Paivi embodies.  So… here’s my page that I’ve started.  Is it finished?  Heck no!  I need more layers more color and more doodles!

How this example was done:

Be sure to check out Paivi’s tutorial on creating her papers!

First step – Background.  This is a page where the background can determine a lot of what you can do with it.

Gesso – to seal the paper bag on the left and the watercolor paper on the right

Color Washes – I use neocolor II’s to do the washes.  I love the color and the permanence.  I used deeper tones in blue, purple and ochre.  I did NOT blend the colors together very much.

Still the ochre and blue mixed a bit on the right and made an olive green.  cool.  It’s not smooth.. but rough and blotchy.

Second step – Doodle.  I used a dip pen and the black acrylic ink that I love so much to do some doodling.  You can use markers if you prefer.

You can see that I let the color patterns determine the shape of my doodles.  No plan, just letting it flow where it wanted to go.

Third step – Doodle.  Next I used my white ink and the dip pen to enhance and accent the shapes.

Fourth step – Shadows.  I got out my waterbrush and picked up color from the neocolors to add shadows around the ropy thing and deepen some of the colors in the background.

Yes, I definitely will be returning to this page… adding more color and more patterns.

  6. You know Tee your pages are so amazing. I noticed today something you do that I have never done and I think it's a subtle thing that makes a huge difference. Shading with your colors. I don't know how to shade.

This was inspiring and you chose a wonderful artist I admire her. Thank you.. Namaste
