Art Journal Prompt:  Character

Instructions:

Character can be about someone’s personality but today it’s about the things that something look unique.  The laugh lines and crow’s feet that mark out the lifetime of a person or the odd and interesting parts of a thing that make it stand out.

What do you see around you that has character?

How I created my page:

My character came out when I was visiting Sam’s this weekend.  Meet Tony.  He works there and he just had such an interesting face.  He said it was ok for me to sketch him so I set out to capture some of the things that made him stand out to me.

First step – Circles.  I painted those first with black neocolor and a waterbrush.  Last time I was at Sam’s I’d told someone I almost sketched the giant package of toilet paper in a person’s cart … so that’s where I started today.  LOL.Circles

Second step – Scribble.  I did a scribble of orange color and set it with the waterbrush because I didn’t know where I wanted to go from there.Orange-Scribble

Third step – Tony

  • Sketch – in sharpie pen.  I roughly sketched in Tony’s face and left off most of the detail.  The orange seemed to be a good frame for his face.
  • Color – I washed in color with my neocolors.  I scribbled them into the lid of the box and used them like regular watercolor.  Did you know you could do that?
  • Detail – I scribbled in more detail with the pitt pen, a pencil and a ball point pen.Tony

Fourth step – Background

  • Blending – I scribbled a couple of shades of golden yellow to blend out the orange scribble.  I kind of like it.
  • Outline – I did a little outline around the circles to make them stand out a bit more and a blue outline around the page.  I want to go back and draw more on that outline.background
