Art Journal Prompt:  Lunch

Instructions:

Example Page:

Lunch

How I created my page:

First step – Hot Dog.  I sketched my hot dog and colored it with neocolors.

Second step – Sketch.  We were eating at Sam's and every time I started to sketch someone they would get up and walk away.  You have to be fast there~!

I was able to catch this beautiful girl who was sitting a few tables away.  When I first decided to sketch her she was looking down at her phone but when I looked back, she was resting her chin in her hand.. and she stayed that way.  So.. that’s how I captured her.

She gave me permission to post her painted image online and I gave her the address so she could see the finished work.  Miss – If you’d like a copy of this study (practice painting) please leave me a message and we’ll get one to you.

Third step – Shining Black Hair

If you know me, you know my first painting was of black beauty in the sixth grade.  It was terrible.  I couldn’t figure out how to put highlights on black watercolor.. so I had a silhouette of a black horse shape.  LOL  I’ve grown a bit and learned some things since then.

  • Gray – I used my lightest shade of gray in the highlight areas.. which was anywhere the light hit her shimmering hair.
  • Black – I shaded the rest lightly with black neocolor
  • Depth – I ran my small waterbrush over the black neocolor to pick up color and used that to streak in deeper shades and depth of color

Fourth step – Skin Tone.  I created this tone with yellow ochre, pink and brown.

Fifth step – Shading with watercolor – I used one neocolor to do the shirt and her tank top.  One color.  the deeper shades develop with more layers of color.  This, by the way, works with any watercolor.

Sixth step – Title and Border.  I used a contrasting color to write in where we were and pitt pens to draw and write a border around the page.

Seventh step – Color Washes.  I filled in the space with washes of colors that I used to paint the images.

Supplies used today:

I updated the images because someone said the hair looked gray instead of black.  The flash washed it out.. hope this is better

  1. How fun is that?! All I end up doing at Sam's is drop $200 and come home with a ton of toilet paper!

  2. LOL I almost sketched the giant package of toilet paper in someone's cart. All the circles were calling to me~ LOL maybe I can add that to the yellow part of the page.
