Relaxation Day and Adolescent Faces Tip

Morgan

I woke up this morning to find a note that Bob and Morgan were at the beach… so I jumped out of bed and joined them…. with sketching stuff in tow of course.  It looked like rain but I brought my watercolors and my journals anyway.

I have a few sketches from this morning in different books but thought I’d share this one.  Morgan wanted me to sketch her with her foot buried in the sand.  I was going to do it in the canson book, but I had a sketch of a seagull drying in that one.

Can you see improvement in my figure drawing… drawing the nudes is really paying off.  My sister has a book with info on draping and laying fabrics.  Looking forward to that too.

Bob says the face is too grown up.  Yep, I can see that I have the features a little too far apart.  Here’s a modified face in photoshop.  Can you see the difference and how this one looks more adolescent?

Modified-Face

I’d started to remove the lines but figured they would help you to see the changes I made.  I pulled the nose and mouth up closer to the eyes.. then the lips up a little more and shrunk them slightly.

Give that a try next time you are drawing a youngster.

Have a great day.. oh and yes.. no prompt today!

  2. Fiddling with it in Photoshop is a nifty way to work out questions or uncertainties. What a great idea. Thanks for sharing.

  5. love your sketch! wish I had read the hints BEFORE I tried to sketch my grandson...lol...I realized right away that he looked older than he was and tried to clean it up, but I'm so new at this I was kinda at a loss...your hints have been very helpful. Thank you...and keep leaving these little gems...I am watching closely. -Becky Massa http://spillingmyheart27.blogspot.com/
