Fire and Ice

Art Journal Prompt:  Contrast

Instructions:

Make a page or project with sharp contrasts.

Example Page:

Fire and Ice

How I created my project:

This is another canvas I worked on over the Christmas Holiday.  These colors just kept popping up in my head... I love the rich rich Quinacridone / Nickel Azo Gold.

It's one of my favorite colors these days... although the more I use the Golden fluid acrylics.. the more I like them all.

Does that mean I'm giving up my other liquid acrylics?  Nope.. love those for my art journal and I totally believe in using what you have.

First step –Texture with Spackle Paste. Heavy texture like this comes from mediums, either texture gels or pastes or in this case, spackle paste.  I got mine at the hardware store.  You can also get it as a powder and mix it yourself.  Biggest tip: be sure to let it dry well.  For me that took 27 hours.
  1. Apply the texture medium with a credit card or scraper and let it dry
  2. Coat with gel medium to seal
  3. Cover with gesso before painting

Second step – Color.  I added several layers of color and contrasts to both halfs of the painting... all done in glazes to reveal the colors already applied.
  • When doing several glazes or layers, let the paint dry between

Third step – Do Over.  The blue side had a glaze over it that turned it greenish.  While it looked cool, it didn't work for me in terms of color.  So, I gessoed over it and started over on that side.  IF I had caught it soon enough I could have just washed the glaze off.  Another good reason to let the previous colors dry before going on to the next.
  • Don't be afraid to start over~!!!

Fourth step Black Out Technique.  Grab a sponge, an old brush, your painting and some black paint and head on over to the sink.
  1. Rub the paint alllllll over the painting. (if it's large work in stages)
  2. Wet the sponge and gently rub it over the painting, rinse
  3. Keep working the sponge over the painting, patting and gently rubbing, until you reveal the painting below.
  4. Lay flat to dry
You can see other work with this technique here, here and here.

Blogger is not letting me upload anymore pics right now.. not sure why.. but you can see more of the texture shots here.
